Times are Tough....GO SHOPPING!

Yes, you heard me right.

I ventured out this week a bit.

Made some long overdue visits to my favorite boutique shops.

My must-go spot in Minneapolis is a wonderful home decor store called Style Minneapolis. The shop is filled with perfectly imperfect antiques selected by its uber-chic owner Shayne Barness.

Shayne and I always have a nice visit when I pop in. This week when I asked Shayne how business had been she told me it had been a rough month. That makes me sad, but not surprised. It seems to be the sentiment in all of retail but particularly hard hit are the independent boutiques.

Now ladies, I read your blogs and I know your love for all things Anthropologie, Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Pottery Barn etc... But I am asking you to make a point to visit your favorite local boutique and give them some business, no matter how small (or large!). Talk to the owner, tell them how much you love their creativity and appreciate the product selections....NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE!

Oh, and after you support your wonderfully fabulous local boutique please join me in sending a donation to one of the many relief organizations who will be providing funding and supplies to the devasation in Haiti.

Have a splendid weekend friends! By the way, these picture were taken in Style Minneapolis, so if you are ever in the neighborhood, stop by and say "hi" to Shayne!

  1. Excellent idea Jill ~ it's the little spots that feel it the worst in January. I will have to take care of that this week-end!

  2. Hi Jill,

This looks like a fabulous shop! Wish I lived closer! Is Shayne, by chance, the designer who did some work on Decorating Cents? If so, she is awesome!

Thank you for this wonderful post about remembering the "mom and pops" during this recession. It is so important!

  4. I totally agree with this!!!! My best friend has a store in Portland, OR. People need to shop! They don't have to spend a small fortune, just SOMETHING..it helps us all.
Her shop is absolutely fabulous! It's called "All My Favorite Things". Isn't that a great name?
She's on Fremont, in Portland, go check her out, all kinds of vintage goodies, something for everyone!

  5. What a great idea! I try to shop artisans on Etsy, it is so much more personal, and you are supporting a real person, not a corporation.
What a beautiful blog you have!
    Have a great weekend,

  7. Enjoyed my tour of your blog. In regard to your promotion of shopping, you might be interested in promoting the 3/50 project. You can google it or find the link on my blog. It's a great way to promote small, locally-owned businesses.

  10. Jill, I could not agree more. Running your own business is sooooo expensive, but the best stuff is found at the little out of the way boutiques:)))

    Love the buffet you found!!
