Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

The photos above and below were taken by me at
last year's Farm Chicks Antiques Show in Spokane, Washington.
The photos show one of my favorite vendor's booth -
Uber Chic who specialize in beautiful pieces from Europe.

I literally 'died' over their dyed grain sack pillows last year -
they are just SO good, a sort of updated/modern take
on the grain sack - which is becoming sort of tired
{in my humble opinion, don't hate me grain sack
lovers....}.  The dyed version were genius - at
least I thought so.

Admittedly, I did not capture their goodness nearly
good enough - but you get the idea.....

Imagine my surprise today, when as I search Pottery Barn's website
for some pillow options for a client, I stumbled
upon this photo below on the Pottery Barn website.

I get it - great ideas are imitated, recreated.....copied....but
I was disappointed to see the genius of a dyed grain sack
mass produced.......
So what do you think?  Is this ok?
Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery?

  1. I think in the beginning bloggers copied designs from Pottery Barn. Now I think Pottery Barn scours the internet and gets there ideas from blogs.

On the Pottery Barn pillows -- I think they missed the mark. They are nowhere near the saturated colors of Uber Chic -- just a watered down version.

  2. I have to imagine
    that Farm Chicks,
    Junk Bonanza and
    other similar sales
    are a big draw for
    companies like PB,
    trying to keep their
    finger on the pulse
    of the latest trends.

    And I will be charitable
    and say YES, it must
    be flattering to find
    your ideas scooped up
    by a big company. But
    it's just that ~ a copy.
A lot of people still want
    the original deal : )

    Happy Tuesday, Jill!

  3. PB does it all the time, they actually have scouts that go out and find things to produce and they do it and get away with it. Sad for the small businesses, but it is nice for those that did not get to shop for the original.

  4. I don't know if it's good or bad but I guess it is inevitable. I like for my home to be unique and sometimes it annoys me that out right copying. But on the other hand I imagine I do it too I probably just call it inspiration.

  5. Jill....I think it is just the sign of the times with pinterest and blogs....nothing is sacred anymore. I saw those pillows....but I think there are still some people who will want the texture of a real grain sack....so hopefully there is something for everyone....

  6. I have the same feelings about this as you. It's always a bit disappointing when something unique becomes common. I believe the first comment hit the nail on the head. The best ideas are coming from the people and now the corporations are copying...not to mention knock offs that are imported. They're rarely as good but at a glance it has the same look.
