Go ahead, be honest.....I can take it!

I purchased the vintage painting pictured above a few weeks ago
at an antique store.  The purchase took me out of my comfort zone.
While I liked the 70's orange-ness of the painting, it was not something
that I would 'normally' be drawn to........and lately I seem to be
in a 'change it up' kind of mood.

When I brought it home my first thought was, "holy &*^" what did I do?
So, I proceed to stick the painting in the back of a closet and feel
bad about the wasted money {which fortunately, was not that much}
and my bad judgement.....

This past weekend I painted my living room Benjamin Moore's "Duxbury Gray" - which cannot
be judged  by the photo above!  I have BIG plans for this room and while doing some
*dreaming* in there today, I decided to pull out the painting and see how it
looked with the new wall color.  Maybe it's growing on me, maybe it's not?????

So dear friends, what do YOU think?  Funky goodness or a regrettable purchase?

  1. To be honest I cant decide. At first I was like eehhh... nope! Then I though weeelll... there is something about it I kinda dig. I am sure you can find something to do with it to make it cool. Love that table its sitting on for sure though!!! Keep us posted on what you do.

  2. Love the frame, the blue vase, and the scale of the flowers. There IS just something about yellow & orange that screams 70s though, isn't there? I don't know, I have faith in you, your spaces are always lovely and I think you can make it work!

  3. I love your taste! Last week's dresser vignette was stunning. I pinned it. I think if anyone could make it work it would be you. My first impression was "bad motel," but I could be swayed...

  4. Maybe if you surround it with a mix of other similar vintage and new painting or pictures with the same colours? My first reaction was not good..but taking a second glance at it I think it just may work in a wall grouping.LOVE your new wall colour! ;)

  5. With the right vignette, I can see it fitting right into your house.

  7. Brilliant purchase - if it was not a big investment! The frame is AWESOME. The size is even better! Try it out, if you don't like it, repaint something wonderful over the top of the 70's image. Or let one of your kids be the creator of the art! The possibilities are endless.

  8. Um, no. But, I applaud your bravery! The wall color is fun!

  9. My aunt had that very painting in the 70's. I am not sure .....but I kind of thought what others did. You always have impeccable taste. I have no doubt everything will look perfect in the end. Lori L

  10. Well, I have to say....when I opened your post I loved the image right away. It makes me smile, and the overall painting and frame give it a sense of character. I mean it does speak to a certain time period but what's wrong with that. It is a classic as far as I am concerned and it has enough weight to it that I would not tire of it easily. I love it against the wall colour but I also simply appreciate it on its own. Personally, I find these older pieces so much more appealing because you don't see them everywhere.
Well, that is my humble opinion.

  11. The 70's didn't invent fall color...God did! I love contrasts (light/dark, neutral/color and complementary colors) so I like it :)

  15. Out of the frame! And in a group! Use the frame for something else...chalkboard, mirror, or empty with something else. That piece of furniture it's on is great, the frame takes away from it, but the painting is fun!

  16. I think it's great! Why not? In fact, I concur with the prior comments about using it to kick-start a grouping of vintage paintings. That would look lovely. I don't feel that it is too "70's" myself. Great frame and wall color, too. Be sure and let us know what you decide. :)

  17. I kind of love it. It has its own charm and character. Stick with it for a while...you can always tuck it back in the closet if you hate it :)

  18. I think this is a fun painting...but the frame needs to be changed out...at least in color!! Lighter I think??

  19. I totally love it. My taste is classic, refined and anything beautiful....pair it with those types of things, I think it can add authentic loveliness to a room. But, if it isn't used properly, it would look dated and out of place. If you lived close to me, I'd buy it if you decided against it.

  20. I like it, but I like quirky stuff. I think it adds personality.

  21. The frame's ok, but it looks like a motel painting from 1971. In other words, I hate it.

  22. Nice frame
You remember what your grandmother taught you about what to say if you can't say anything nice...

  23. Love the painting--so colorful-- and it looks fantastic with the wall color which I really like. How about painting the frame an antique silver with a black stain or paint to distress. The woods on the frame and the dresser seem to contrast, but I think the new color combination would pull the basket and the hardware on your dresser together with the frame. BTW, if that creamy white section is fabric, I have painted over that before--pull a soft color out of the painting to help update that area or paint it the same as the frame. Lots of great suggestions--have fun with it! Kimberly

  24. Loving the wall color (was dreaming of something similar in my master) and I know you can make that painting work! It would be neat to pull it out of the frame and put it on a stretcher (Heather Bullard just posted something about that). Maybe you could even tone down the colors with some type of wash. It would look great with some of your blue and white collection. Love the little commode! Can't wait to see your room, I know it will fabulous friend!

  25. I saw this painting (which I don't enjoy) and then I saw your post from January 16 and it made me chuckle. :)

  26. I'm with all the lovers. Jen's absolutely right that it's a bit quirky but that adds personality. Almost even a bit edgy dare I say... When it comes to art it's good to have a mix, my Paris-educated, high-flying curator/gallery director friend says so :) (she even appreciates paint-by-numbers paintings!)

  27. I like it jill. I love the frame, but it would look fantastic in a distressed black. I think that would make the furniture piece and the painting stand out more. I am sure you will come up with something totally wonderful, can't wait to see....

  28. I love the pc of furniture it is sitting on. Love the frame but not so much the picture itself. I have noticed that lots of these old oil paintings are being revamped.. They can be touched up with oil paint in different colors and you dont need exceptional skill to fix it to your specific taste and color.. It's certainly not horrible by any means.. If you like it thats what matters..

  29. I love the painting with the wall color. As for style, mix it up, if you enjoy it...keep it. It is your home and not a cookie cutter tract house! Enjoy.

  31. I make things "work" a bit better for my color scheme by taking a little craft paint or even the wwall paintand painting over the colors that aren't quite right. Works like a charm. I suggest that for this painting. I think if you ise it with this dresser, itneeds to be hung. I agree to paint the frame.

  32. I think it's cool! What matters is that you like it, it's your home and only you should decide if it stays or goes.
